Family Work
Families are complex structures that are bound to each other in many ways, just one family member has the ability to affect everyone else, to break them down, to make them happy, to cause worry, concern or joy.
Healthy families stay healthy by communicating, by being open and honest about how they feel and by putting in place and maintaining healthy boundaries.
When there is a problem in the family, everyone becomes affected; relationships change, behaviours and attitudes change, individuals make changes to the way they address each other, roles change within the family structure. This is particularly relevant when a member of the family is addicted to substances or behaviours, everyone retreats into their own world, not saying anything in case they rock the boat, but unhappy in the situation, they feel powerless and angry creating
frustration, isolation and fear.
Issues brought to family therapy include:
- Improving communication
- Putting Health and Appropriate Boundaries in place
- Support or Lack of
- Expressing Feelings – even though that may be painful to hear and say
- Working Together – formulating a plan of action
- Family Roles
- Trust
- Respect
To address this work effectively I recommend that the family make a commitment to work through their problems together. I often see families who are unable to communicate and are scared or angry, they really don’t know where to turn and Family Counselling helps to break down some of these fears.
In addition to traditional counselling work I also do Family Therapy as part of my Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) practice. More information on this can be found on the related pages. |
