Addictions

If you have opened this page you or someone you love may be suffering from an addiction.  What is addiction?

Drugs, Alcohol, Food, Shopping, Sex, Gambling, Relationships, and Eating Disorders are all coping strategies for feelings that we do not wish to recognise or experience, so we use a substance or behaviour to make those feelings go away.  The problem is that the more you use a substance, the more you will need to take in order to have the same effect – addiction is a progressive disease and you need help to address it.

It’s not just about stopping the addiction, it’s about why you choose to pick up a substance or behaviour in the first place and what effect it now has on your life and the lives of those around you.

Addictions affect:

  • Health
  • Physical Appearance
  • Family Members, especially partners and children
  • Friends and Social Life
  • Work

You may need support to cope with living with someone suffering from an addiction; it is very easy to have your life swept up in the whirlwind of chaos caused by addictions.
