Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder (previously known as Manic Depression) is characterised by the individual suffering from severe mood swings – from one pole to another.
Low moods can bring on intense levels of depression and feelings of despair and helplessness, often accompanied by thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Some individuals are unable to sleep, lose their appetite and avoid social engagements.
High moods escalate into feelings of elation, increased activity and intensity, restlessness and inability to focus. This aspect of the disorder can find individuals planning grand gestures, spending money they don’t have, becoming euphoric and potentially putting themselves into dangerous situations. They don’t often realise they are in a euphoric state.
Individuals who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder should be under the care of their doctor or psychiatrist as medication will be required to regulate the mood swings. However, counselling can help as it is important to understand about the disorder; learn to recognise when your moods are escalating or dropping and to develop coping skills.
Living with a sufferer of Bipolar Disorder can be extremely distressing and emotionally draining. If you need support, please call.
